Tray Selector is a Word Add-in. There is a feature in Word where from time to time it can disable Add-ins and stop them loading up when you start Word. When this happens Tray Selector can be missing from the ribbon bar (or tool bar). This rarely happens but we have seen this happen on the odd odd occasion. The cause of this happening is hard to isolate. Microsoft say an Add-in will be disabled if it is slow to respond. This could come down to many factors like the speed of machines, printer drivers, terminal servers etc. etc.
In most cases it is a simple task to re-enable the add-in. There are two ways to achieve this. The first is to follow the instructions below to re-enable using the Word built in dialog boxes or secondly you can use a command line tool we supply to speed up this process described at the bottom of this page.
To do this open word then do File->Options to display the “Word Options” dialog box. On the panel on the left hand side click Add-ins as shown below:
This will then show a new dialog box (shown below). From here you should see that the TraySelector entry is unchecked. Check this and click OK. This should now show the Tray Selector ribbon bar entry as before. In some cases the Add-in is placed in disabled items by Word. In this case select “Disabled items” in the drop down box shown above, instead of COM Add-ins, click Go.. and a new dialog box will appear. If Tray Selector is in the list of disabled items select it and click “Enable”.
Restart Word to ensure that Tray Selector is present.
In some very rare instances after you restart Word Tray Selector has been removed again. This can be because Word has decided that the Add-In is very slow loading and goes further by preventing a user from re-enabling it using the method described above.
Command line Tool
In this instance we have provided a program that can be used to fix the registry entries. Close Word then look in your Tray Selector install folder usually C:\Program Files (x86)\TraySelector\One you will find an .exe called adxregistrator.exe. Run a command tool “cmd” as Administrator and change into this folder with the command “cd C:\Program Files (x86)\TraySelector\One”. Once there run the command “adxregistrator.exe /install=”TraySelector.dll” /privileges=admin”. Restart Word and all should be well. A logfile is produced in your Documents/Add-in Express folder called adxregistrator.txt. You can also use this method to fix the problem above to avoid having to open dialog boxes.

As a postscript you may be interested in the registry entries that control this behaviour. Administrators can control these with startup scripts of GPO to alleviate the problem. The keys are:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\TraySelectorOne.AddinModule which should have a REG_DWORD entry of “LoadBehaviour” set to the value 3.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\AddInLoadTimes delete any binary entries in there called TraySelectorOne.AddinModule. Replace 16.0 with your word version where 16.0 = Word 2016, 15.0 = Word 2013, 14.0 = Word 2010 etc.
